Bugg Pub// Nashville 2 for 1′s

July 1, 2012 · Gibs

In light of our Bugg Pub section (and fact we’re quite thirsty here) I felt the need to help my fellow sippers, bartender tippers, and fake i.d getters do what they do best…. Drink. After coming to the enlightening realization that my friends and I had the opportunity to drink 2 for 1’s five of the last 7 days I felt the need to investigate. Beer Recommendation: Saint Arnold Amber Ale

May 29, 2012 · Gibs

What do you do when one of your friends brings you a brew from the oldest craft brewery in Texas? This. Inspired by the patron saint of beer Saint Arnold’s amber Ale is malty with a slight hop feel and hint of chocolate. By combining five different malts the brew transcends the typical ale, making it the breweries flag ship beer released in 1994. Accidentally creating an IPA through the initial brewing process the recipe was altered but remains quite the hop head’s ale. Below is the description of the breweries name sake inscribed on every neck of the bottle. Cheers

“As Bishop of Metz, Saint Arnold spent his life warning of the dangers of drinking water and extolling the virtues of ale. During his funeral, his pallbearers stopped to slake their thirst, but regretfully there was one mug of ale to share among them. Then a miracle came to pass… that one mug never ran dry, and all of the thirsty mourners in the entire gathering were satisfied.

Duval Pic

Beer Recommendation- Duval

May 19, 2012 · mcclardy

Any time I stop in at a wine shop I make sure to check out the high gravity beers they have on hand. Generally stores have a pretty low turn over on their high gravity stuff so I try to check different shops to ensure I see a larger variety. Last week I stopped by place on the way home from work and ran across Duvel, Belgian Strong Pale Ale. Since the weather has warmed up I’ve been digging Belgian styles for their light body so I decided to pick up a bottle and give it a shot.

It pours a very light yellow gold that looks more like apple juice than beer. A huge four finger head accumulates very quickly and recedes very slowly, with smaller bubbles from the edge joining larger bubbles in the center. The head eventually recedes completely around the edge, but leaves an island of white in the middle of the glass.

Smells very light and fruity. There is no trace of malt in the nose. Sweet spice, floral, and fruit aromas dominate. There is a hint of banana and traces of yeast on the back end.

The first taste is very similar to the aroma. The sweet and fruity taste is complex and layered. This is backed by the taste of alcohol, which is clearly present but not overwhelming. It is highly carbonated. The carbonation gives it a mouth feel and dry finish like champagne.

Through the glass there is not a lot of development in flavor, but the flavors present balance out. It seems to become sweeter, more concise, and drier.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the beer. It’s light crisp body made it very drinkable despite its ABV at 8.5. It’s great for summer porch sitting.

“Chad Man”- Sotally Sober Submission

April 19, 2012 · Gibs

Not quite familiar with our newest Bugg Pub section? Allow me to introduce. Aside from covering all things beer Bugg Pub will also feature user submitted drinking games as well as videos such as this brilliant masterpiece. Below is our first of many Sotally Sober Submissions brought to you courtesy of two innovative gentlemen Kyle Brock and Brian Raess of Ohio. These fellas managed to capture their roommate’s drunken stumbles after returning from a dance..with a different date. This may be the funniest drunken video I’ve ever seen and possibly the longest piss in the world. So without further adieu I give you “Chad Man”

Beer Recommendation: Dogfish Aging Project

April 16, 2012 · Gibs

Recently I decided to age four different Dogfish Head beers (by recently I mean one year ago) and I convinced myself to go ahead and bust a couple out the other night just because the one year had passed, but mainly because I didn’t have any beer to drink*. If you live in Tennessee, or in the majority of the United States for that matter, you may have noticed that Dogfish Head beers are getting harder and harder to find. Due to a desire to maintain manageable growth while still being able to make whatever beer they want to make, they have had to stop distributing in many states, Tennessee included. As soon as I got the word that this was happening I went to my favorite liquor store* and bought a case of different variaties of Dogfish Head to hoard until I find a more efficient way to find the beer. Well it’s been one year so I feel comfortable finally having a few.

The ones I had were two of my favorites, the Indian Brown Ale and the Raison D’Etre. I didn’t exactly age them right; I didn’t have the means to age it at a certain temperature, but there was still a noticeable change in the beers, much more of a rich flavor. Although the alcohol content rose slightly, the actual taste of alcohol was pretty faint and these brown beers both had all sorts of new nuttier flavors then they had in their original capacity. I didn’t take notes while I drank but I noticed that the hop taste was definitely less present in the Indian Brown than I had remembered upon my first tasting and the fruity elements of the Raison D’Etre were much more present as well.

If you have access to these brews and have not taken advantage of them, fuck you. If you have, you’ll probably know why I was so eager to hoard them. Happy monday and drink up.

St. Patrick’s Day

March 17, 2012 · Gibs

Yep, it’s finally here, my favorite day of the year, St. Patrick’s Day. The day we celebrate some dude named Patrick for doing something that none of us remember, what better reason to crack open some Guinness and forget everything else. To prepare you I thought I’d throw up a few helpful videos. The first one is a video of one of my favorite up-and-coming Irish bands, The Minutes, who I was able to work with when I was in Ireland this past summer. Here is their song ‘In My Time Of Dying’, recorded in Austin, Texas. Enjoy.

The next visuals will help you in your quest for brew-perfection today, and may actually make a significant difference in your Guinness experience. Cheers to our friends at SNEAKHYPE for this video!

Beer Recommendation: Guinness, Smithwicks, Beamish Stout, Murphy’s Irish Stout, Harp Lager – take your pick.

New Belgium Brewery

March 11, 2012 · Gibs

I’ve been somewhat absent from the blog for about a week because I was able to take a trip to Colorado with some friends to visit my favorite place in the entire world, the New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins. If you ever get a chance to head over that way then I emphatically suggest that you do so. You can try some of the best of their brews and see the incredible complex FOR FREE. I listed all of the brews tried in my phone so I would be able to remember (harder than you might think towards the end) what I had. Here’s what I wrote:

Cocoa Mole Ale (Lips of Faith series) – Spicy ale with strong hints of cocoa and cinnamon

Valentines Day Ale (Lips of Faith series) – Kind of tastes like a raspberry cider

Fat Tire

Abbey Ale – Tastes kind of like Bananas, first new Belgium brew, comes from the Belgium Yeast

Abbey Grand Crew

Trippel

La Folie Sour Brown – ages long, full of bacteria

Belgo IPA

Towards the end there I was getting a bit drunk so that explains the “full of bacteria” note on the La Folie. I’ll just talk about a couple of highlights from that selection, which were the Cocoa Mole Ale and La Folie.

Cocoa Mole Ale

The Cocoa Mole Ale was probably the most interesting discovery on my trip and also just happened to be the first, making it much more memorable. The best comparison I would have for it would be to Rogue’s Chipotle ale in its spice characteristics, which comes from the chipotle pepper infusion in the malt. This ale is much different in that however because of the inclusion of cocoa and cinnamon. It’s goes down very bitter but in the most delicious way possible. If you somehow find this ale I would definitely recommend it. It’s part of the Lips of Faith series so it will only be available in a bomber, but don’t let that deter you. The second brew I’d like to highlight was one I was already familiar with, La Folie, New Belgium’s wood aged sour brown. It’s a bit of a pricey beer at about $17.99, but it definitely is unique if you are new to sour ales. The way that they are able to get that sour taste is through the aging process in the bacteria that is built up (sounds dank am I right?). I was able to try a few other sour ales while I was in London this summer and I have to say that La Folie is still the best that I’ve had. If you’re feeling bold and see it then I would take a chance on it, you might be surprised.

Beer Recommendation: Yazoo Hop Project

March 7, 2012 · Gibs

Bold blends of aromatic hops that are chosen with such diversity you never get the same blend twice? Yup, Yazoo’s take on IPA has even the stubbornness of Hopheads venturing into the various blends of hop heaven. There is consistency in the brew itself but, the distinct yet subtle, differences created by the variation of hops tend to keep taste buds on their toes.  Yazoo even goes as far as to offer a decoder through their blog that correlates bottle and date to determine what specific hop varieties were used in that particular batch. So if you’re thirsty and or adventurous give Nashville’s local a try. You won’t regret it. Cheers
