    Hey guys,
ZZ Ward recently introduced us to her gritty blend of hip-hop and blues with her Eleven Roses mixtape. Her collection features reinterpretations of some of Ward’s favorite hip-hop tracks including Tyler, The Creator’s “Yonkers,” Childish Gambino’s “You Know Me,” Freddie Gibbs’s “Oil Money,” and Wiz Khalifa/Curren$y’s “Rooftops.” The offering also boasts two originals produced by Kid Cudi/Cool Kids collaborators, Blended Babies, and two acoustic renditions of songs to be featured on her debut full-length, which is due out this year.

ZZ’s song selection was chosen through inspiration by some of her favorite artists: “I was writing my album one day and I was listening to Tyler, The Creator to get some inspiration. When ‘Yonkers’ started playing, I started singing over him and when the chorus dropped I freestyled the melodies you currently hear on ‘Better Off Dead.’ That was the first domino to fall — the inspiration behind creating the mixtape. I got the instrumental and wrote a full song over it and then wrote over a dozen or so other songs that I love before narrowing it down to my favorites.”

Growing up on the blues and connecting with hip-hop from a young age, Eleven Roses gives an accurate depiction of what’s in store from ZZ Ward. While she is putting finishing touches on her forthcoming full-length, Ward allowed us a sneak peek into her record-making process with video footage of the burgeoning artist at work with the highly esteemed DJ and producer, DJ Premier.

“I love Premo, he’s such a legend but so humble. It was great working with him,” says Ward. Having shared this experience, she also admits: “My favorite part was getting to watch his creative process because I may be one of the few people on this planet that had the opportunity to experience that.”
